Toyota Confirms the Inevitable: A Corolla Cross Hybrid Is Coming

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is due to add a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain to its options list next year. The announcement of the likely 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid was made during the reveal of the small SUV.

While details are still scarce, we expect the Corolla Cross to share its hybrid components with the Corolla Hybrid sedan. This means the Corolla Cross will likely make do with 121 horses from its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and associated electric motors. It’s unclear if the Corolla Cross Hybrid will offer all-wheel drive or not. Regardless, we expect the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s fuel economy to top 40 mpg.

When the Corolla Cross comes out this fall, it will be powered by a 2.0-liter l-4 engine that makes 169 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard across the line. Besides sharing its powertrain with the Corolla sedan and hatchback (in those cars the 2.0-liter engine is an available option), the Corolla Cross also rides on the same platform as its sedan and hatch stablemates.

While entry-level SUVs have grown like weeds, gasoline-electric hybrid options remain a scarcity in the segment. As such, it’s a space the Corolla Cross can capitalize on. Players such as the Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, and Buick Encore GX all rely strictly on gas engines for power, while the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid.

Look for the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid to come out in the first half of next year.
